On the last leg of my New England Fall Tour, my mom and I checked out New Hampshire and Vermont. We stayed for one night in Mt. Washington and three nights in Enfield, NH. These were some of my favorite days of our trip!
Mount Washington
I only have praise for Mount Washington. The Omni Hotel at Bretton Woods was one of the most beautiful, scenic hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The rooms were huge (we stayed in a corner double queen room) and very elegantly decorated, as well as the parlor and restaurants. Upon our arrival, after a 5 hour journey from Acadia National Park, my mom and I hit the Rosebrook Bar, where we had some very tasty sandwiches–I had a meatloaf sandwich and my mom had a chicken sandwich. We then took in the views. The back deck wraps around nearly the entire hotel and has plenty of seating to enjoy a drink and watch the sunset. Since it was quite cold outside, we instead had some hot cocoa by the first and called it a night.
The next morning, we had breakfast in the main dining room. I’m usually very hesitant when it comes to breakfast buffets but this was greatly exceeded my expectations. The food options were very gourmet–from a bagel and lox station to gluten free options, there was something for everyone.
The Mount Washington Resort also has plenty of outdoor activities. During the winter, it is a premier ski resort and during the summer there is hiking, horseback riding, zip lining, among other activities. Since we were only there for a short time, my mom and I just did a hike but it offered some great views of the property surrounding the hotel. From the back deck, you can hike many miles. The trail we went on followed the river and led to two waterfalls, as well as beautiful rock gorges. It was a easy trail (I did it wearing jeans and Toms) and a great way to get a feel for the property!
Our last stop before leaving was lunch at Stickney’s. Although the service was a bit slow and not an ideal quick bite, the food was, again, delicious! With just a bowl of soup (tomato for me and clam chowder for my mom) and bruschetta, it filled us up for our drive to Enfield.
Shaker Hill B&B
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Shaker Hill B&B. Nancy kindly welcomed us into her home, so much so that we felt like we lived there! We stayed in the Shaker Room, which is a nicely sized room in the front of the house, complete with vintage Shaker accents and furniture. Nancy also has two Vizsla’s, who were incredibly friendly and so cute! In fact, they modeled in several Vizsla calendars. Nancy did a truly incredible job with morning homemade breakfasts (my favorites include poached pears and a cheese/egg souffle medley) and had endless suggestions on places to see in the area. Food
Molly’s Restaurant (Hanover, NH) – Moderately priced local Dartmouth hangout. Best pizza around!
Simon Pearce Restaurant (Quechee, VT) – Pricey but delicious food. Farm to table themed with a Simon Pearce Glass Store adjacent to the restaurant.
Morano Gelato (Hanover, NH) – Best gelato shop around. Traditional flavors.
Hiking
Quechee Gorge (Quechee, VT) – Short but beautiful walk town to the bottom of Quechee Gorge. “Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon”. There is a small gift shop at the trailhead.
Mt. Cardigan (Orange, NH) – A moderately strenuous hike up to the summit of Mt. Cardigan. Busy on the weekends, so get there early for prime parking spots! Beautiful 360 views of the surrounding mountains.
Must-See Local Sites
Downtown Woodstock (Woodstock, VT) – Touristy quintessential New England town. Very busy on the weekend and during peak seasons. Check out the Vermont Flannel Company and The Village Butcher for local staples.
Sugarbush Farm (Woodstock, VT) – One of my favorite cheese shops. I buy from them every few months via their online store. Local farm for cheese and maple syrup, as well as honey, jams, etc. Tastings available daily. Nature walk for the family and farm animals for kids.
Ben and Jerry’s Factory (Waterbury, VT) – Tour the facility and get an ice cream tasting at the end.
Downtown Stowe (Stowe, VT) – Quaint New England town. Hiking and skiing available at the nearby ski resort, Stowe Mountain Resort.
The Vermont Country Store (Rockingham, VT) – Multiple locations. Worth the drive from Enfield. Your one-stop shop for everything New England (Apothecary, Home Goods, Food, Clothes, etc).
